Storytime Programs - Spring 2015, Week Two

Welcome to our second week of storytime programs in Spring 2015.  We offer storytimes for babies from birth on up. Some of our programs require pre-registration, others are drop-in.  Please check our Events Calendar http://gailbweb.gailborden.info/evanced/lib/eventcalendar.asp, give us a call, or stop by the desk in the Early Learning Center if you would like more information. We hope you are able to join us and share in the fun!  Below you will find some of the books, rhymes, and fingerplays we are presenting this week.

Baby Rhyme Time (For babies 0-11 months and a caregiver)

Books
Time For Bed - Horacek
Say Goodnight - Oxenbury

Rhyme: The Baby Is Trying To Sleep
The chicks say, "Cheep, cheep,"
The puppies say, "Woof, woof,"
The mommies say, "Shhh, shhh, the baby is trying to sleep."
The birds say, "Tweet, tweet,"
The kittens say, "Meow, meow,"
The daddies say, "Shhh, shhh, the baby is trying to sleep."

Make up silly rhymes and encourage your baby to imitate the words and sounds he hears.  This helps your child develop phonological awareness, or an understanding of the smaller parts of words.
Baby Storytime Magic - MacMillan & Kirker

Wonderful Ones (For babies 12-23 months and a caregiver)

Books
Playtime For Twins - Weiss
Baby Parade - O'Connell

Rhyme: Ten Little Children
One little, two little, three little children,
Four little, five little, six little children,
Seven little, eight little, nine little children,
Ten little boys and girls.

Repetition is key when it comes to learning anything.  Teach your toddler numbers by counting everywhere - count toys as you help your child put them away, count the items you put in your cart at the store, count toes while changing a diaper...

Terrific Twos (For toddlers 2-3 years and a caregiver)

Books
The Very Lonely Firefly - Carle
Sun Is Falling, Night Is Calling - Leuck
Night Lights - Gal

Action Rhyme: The Moon
Do you want to go up with me to moon?
Let's get in our rocket ship and blast off soon!
Faster and faster we reach to the sky
Isn't it fun to be able to fly?
We're on the moon, now all take a look
Sit back down, and I'll read you a book.

This is a fun action rhyme to share again with your toddler at home.  If, like many of our youngest customers, your child shows an interest in rocket ships and all kinds of transportation, be sure to check out some titles from our Rigs & Digs section in the Early Learning Center.

1, 2, 3, Go! (For children 1, 2, and 3 years and a caregiver)

Books
I'm The Biggest Thing In The Ocean - Sherry
Ten Little Fish - Wood

Action Rhyme: I'm A Little Fishy
I'm a little fishy
Watch me swim
Here is my tail
Here are my fins
When I want to have fun with all my friends
I wiggle, wiggle, wiggle my tail and dive right in!

Your child is surely fascinated by all the creatures in the fish tank in the Early Learning Center.  On your next visit ask him about what he can see.  Do all the fish look the same?  Do they have arms and legs like your child?  Can he spot the turtle?

StoryMix For 3 to 6 (For children 3-6 years without caregiver)

Books
Fire Engines - Rockwell
Alphabet Rescue - Wood
"Fire!  Fire!" Said Mrs. McGuire - Martin

Action Rhyme: Put Out The Fire
(Tune: Good Night Ladies)
Drive the fire truck
Drive the fire truck
Drive the fire truck
Let's all put out the fire.
Sound the siren...
Climb the ladder...
Squirt the hose...
Fire is all out (wipe forehead - Whew!)
Fire is all out
Fire is all out
We all put out the fire.
Drive the fire truck...
We all put out the fire (softly)

Your child is bound to enjoy repeating this rhyme with you at home!  If you'd like to read more about firefighters with your preschooler, be sure to check out some books in our Rigs & Digs section.  Just ask at the Early Learning Center Desk if you'd like some help.  Did you know we also have fire fighter themed puzzles available for check out?

This week's handout to the preschoolers included some information about an upcoming program here at the library - 1,000 Books Before Kindergarten.  Beginning April 18th, the Gail Borden Public Library is encouraging families to join this simple reading incentive program.  Stay tuned for more information!
