Storytime Programs - Spring 2015, Week Three

Welcome to our third week of storytime programs in Spring 2015.  We offer storytimes for babies from birth on up. Some of our programs require pre-registration, others are drop-in.  Please check our Events Calendar http://gailbweb.gailborden.info/evanced/lib/eventcalendar.asp, give us a call, or stop by the desk in the Early Learning Center if you would like more information. We hope you are able to join us and share in the fun!  Below you will find some of the books, rhymes, and fingerplays we are presenting this week.

Baby Rhyme Time (For babies 0-11 months and a caregiver)

Books
Sweet Dreams, Little Bunny - Boelts
Bunny Day - Scott

Bouncing Rhyme: Baby Bunny
Baby bunny bounces high
Baby bunny bounces low
Baby bunny blinks his eyes
Baby bunny waves goodbye

The babies and one year olds are talking about bunnies during this Easter season.  Pretending to be animals and imitating their movements helps your child's physical development.
Baby Storytime Magic - MacMillan & Kirker

Wonderful Ones (For babies 12-23 months and a caregiver)

Books
Somebunny Loves You - Gever
Follow The Bunny - Dillard

Rhyme: I'm A Little Bunny
I'm a little bunny
Watch me hop
Here are my ears
See them flop
Here is my cottontail
Here is my nose
I'm covered with fur
From my head to my toes

Repeat this rhyme at home with your child making sure to emphasize the different body parts.  Find some pictures of bunnies or perhaps a stuffed bunny toy.  Where are his ears, where is his tail...?

Terrific Twos (For toddlers 2-3 years and a caregiver)

Books
The Short Giraffe - Flory
I Wish I Could Fly - Maris
Tall - Alborough

Action Rhyme: Here Is A Nest
Here is a nest for robin (cup both hands)
Here is a hive for bees (fists together)
Here is a hole for bunny (make circle)
And here is a house for ME!  (make roof)

We are continuing our opposites theme with tall and short this week.  Who is tall in your family? Who is short?

1, 2, 3, Go! (For children 1, 2, and 3 years and a caregiver)

Books
Flip, Flap, Fly! - Root
Wow! Said The Owl - Hopgood

Action Rhyme: Owl In The Tree
Owl in the tree goes hoo, hoo, hoo,
Owl in the tree goes hoo, hoo, hoo,
Owl in the tree goes hoo, hoo, hoo,
Skip to my lou, my darling.

Bee in the hive goes buzz, buzz, buzz...
Duck in the pond goes quack, quack, quack...
Rat in the barn goes gnaw, gnaw, gnaw...

Repeat this rhyme at home with your toddler.  Make up more verses by adding other animals and their sounds and homes - the cow in the field, the dog in the kennel, etc...

StoryMix For 3 to 6 (For children 3-6 years without caregiver)

Books
Chefs And What They Do - Slegers
How To Make A Pancake - Max
Hooray For Hoppy! - Hopgood
10 Easter Egg Hunters - Schulman

Action Rhyme: Mix A Pancake
Mix a pancake, stir a pancake
Pop it in a pan
Cook a pancake, toss a pancake
Catch it if you can!

Preschoolers often like to help in the kitchen.  Whenever possible, find a small way for your child to participate if you are cooking or baking - stir with a spoon, get out or measure ingredients for a recipe, identify letters on food packages... This is a fun opportunity for talking with and encouraging your child's cooperation at home.

This week's handout to the preschoolers included some information about an upcoming program here at the library - 1,000 Books Before Kindergarten.  Beginning April 18th, the Gail Borden Public Library is encouraging families to join this simple reading incentive program.  Stay tuned for more information.
