Storytime Programs - Fall I, 2015 Week Two

Welcome to the second week of  storytimes.  Some of our programs only have a few remaining spaces, so contact us soon if you would like to join in the fun!  In addition to our weekly storytimes, there are numerous special events happening - check our Events Calendar http://gailbweb.gailborden.info/evanced/lib/eventcalendar.asp, give us a call, or stop by the desk in the Early Learning Center if you would like more information.  We hope that you'll join us and make a visit to the library part of  your year-round routine.   Below you will find some of the books, rhymes, and fingerplays we are presenting this week.

Baby Rhyme Time (For babies 0-11 months and a caregiver)

Books
Maisy's Train - Cousins
Trucks - Powell

Rhyme: This is the Way the Car Goes
This is the way the car goes (Bounce baby on lap)
Bumpity, bumpity, bump
This is the way the car goes
Bumpity, bumpity, bump
Uh-oh, there's a bump in the road
Bumpity, bumpity, bump! (Let baby gently down to floor through legs)

Relate rhymes and books to your baby's experiences.  Use our storytime theme to have a conversation with your baby about riding in a car seat, stroller, etc.  It doesn't matter if your baby can answer you or not.  Most importantly, your baby needs to hear your words!

Wonderful Ones (For babies 12-23 months and a caregiver)

Books
Baby Says "Moo!" - Macken
I Went Walking - Williams

Puppet Rhyme: The Animals on the Farm
(Tune: Wheels on the Bus)
The cows on the farm go moo, moo, moo
Moo, moo, moo, moo, moo, moo
The cows on the farm go moo, moo, moo
All day long
(Horses - Neigh/Pigs - Oink/Duck - Quack)

Storytime was made even more fun this week with the addition of farm animal puppets!  Repeat this rhyme at home with your toddler and see if he can help out with the animal sounds.  Does he know what sounds other animals make?

Terrific Twos (For toddlers 2-3 years and a caregiver)

Books
My Bike - Barton
New Red Bike! - Ransome

Action Rhyme: My Bike (Tune: Farmer in the Dell)
Pedal round and round (Roll hands around each other)
I steer my bike (Pretend to steer)
To where I like
Pedal round and round

A bike ride can be a great time to expand your child's vocabulary. Point out what you see and hear in your neighborhood as you ride or toddle along.

1, 2, 3, Go! (For children 1, 2, and 3 years and a caregiver)

Books
Corduroy's Day - Freeman
Two at the Zoo - Smith

Action Rhyme: Grr Grr Went the Big Brown Bear
Grr grr went the big brown bear one day
Grr grr went the big brown bear
Grr grr went the big brown bear one day
And they all went grr grr grr
BUT, we know bears go huggy huggy hug
Huggy, huggy, hug, huggy, huggy hug
We know bears go huggy, huggy hug
They don't go grr grr grr

Sing this rhyme at home with your toddler - it's a good opportunity to have fun and cuddle up together at the same time too!  Does your toddler have a favorite teddy bear to sing with also?

StoryMix For 3 to 6 (For children 3-6 years without caregiver)

Books
Gladys Goes Out To Lunch - Anderson
The Boy Who Loved Bananas - Elliot (Storycards)
Little Gorilla - Bornstein

Action Rhyme: Five Little Bananas
Five little bananas
Swinging in the trees
If a monkey picks one
And carries it away
How many bananas
Will be left to sway?
(Four little bananas, three .....)

This fingerplay is a fun introduction to subtraction.  Find other ways to incorporate the lesson into your day.  Subtract toys when you put them away or grapes when you eat them at snack time.  Make a long line of shoes and play a game of addition and subtraction.  What other things can your preschooler think of?
