Storytime Programs - Spring 2016, Week One

Welcome to the first week of spring storytime programs.  In addition to our weekly storytimes, there are numerous special events happening so be sure to check our Events Calendar http://gailbweb.gailborden.info/evanced/lib/eventcalendar.asp, give us a call, or stop by the desk in the Early Learning Center if you would like more information.  We hope that you'll be joining us.   Below you will find some of the books, rhymes, and fingerplays we are presenting this week.

Baby Rhyme Time (For babies 0-11 months and a caregiver)

Books
What Can You Do in the Rain? by Hines
This Little Baby Goes Out by Breeze

Prop Rhyme: Wind (with Scarf)
Wind can be a gentle breeze,
Gentle breeze, gentle breeze,
Wind can be a gentle breeze in the spring.
Wind can help you fly a kite,
Fly a kite, fly a kite,
Wind can help you fly a kite in the spring.

Show your baby the meaning of the word "wind" by repeating this rhyme at home using a silky scarf, ribbon or something similar to gently wave in the air.  Young babies will track it with their eyes and older babies will want to reach out and grasp it.

Wonderful Ones (For babies 12-23 months and a caregiver)

Books
Who's in the Farmyard? by Gershator
Guess Who Eats What by Slegers

Action Rhyme: The Animals on the Farm
(Tune: The Wheels on the Bus)
The cows on the farm go moo, moo, moo,
Moo, moo, moo, moo, moo, moo.
The cows on the farm go moo, moo, moo,
All day long.
Horses - neigh
Pigs - oink
Duck - quack

This is a such a fun and easy rhyme to sing at home or in the car.  Repeat using as many different farm animals you can think of!

Terrific Twos (For toddlers 2-3 years and a caregiver)

Books
Leap Back Home to Me by Thompson
A Frog in the Bog by Wilson

Action Rhyme: Five Little Froggies
One little froggy goes HOP!
Along comes another and they just can't stop.
So two little froggies go HOP!  HOP!
Along comes another and they just can't stop.
So three little froggies go HOP!  HOP! HOP!
Along comes another and they just can't stop.
So four little froggies go HOP!  HOP!  HOP!  HOP!
Along comes another and they just can't stop.
So five little froggies go HOP!  HOP!  HOP!  HOP!  HOP!
HOP!  DROP!  STOP!
Time to stop!

When your toddler has oodles of energy, sing this rhyme with him!  Count the five frogs on fingers, count hops or jumps on the floor.  Whew!

1, 2, Go!  (For children 1-3 years and a caregiver)

Books
Lucky Tucker by McGuirk
Where Is the Green Sheep? by Fox

Action Rhyme: Spring is Here!
(Tune: Jingle Bells)
Spring is here!  Spring is here!
Winter's gone away.
When the sun is shining bright,
Outside we run and play - yay!

Spring is here!  Spring is here!
Let's all give a cheer.
We see lots of shamrocks,
St. Patrick's Day is near!

We read and sang about lots of green things today!  Find and count green things in your house, in your yard, in the grocery store.

StoryMix For 3 to 6 (For children 3-6 years without caregiver)

Books
The Cow Who Clucked by Fleming
Millie Wants to Play by Pedersen
Cows in the Kitchen by Crebbin

Action Rhyme: Three Friendly Cows
Three friendly cows went moo, moo, moo,
One walked away and then there were two.
Two friendly cows standing in the sun,
One walked away and there was one.
One friendly cow wanted to have some fun,
She went to find the others,
And there were none.

Repeat this rhyme at home and try moving individual fingers to count down the cows.  Every time your child practices movements like this, he is strengthening the hand muscles needed for writing as he gets older.

Family Jam (For families with young children)

Books
Barnyard Song by Greene
Mary Had a Little Lamb by Hale

Action Rhyme: Little Red Tractor
Bouncing up and down in my little red tractor,
Bouncing up and down in my little red tractor,
Bouncing up and down in my little red tractor,
Bouncing all day long!
Scooping up some dirt...
Lifting dirt up high...
Waving to my friends...

Find pictures of tractors in books or on the internet if your child has never seen one before.  How many wheels do they have?  Do they have an engine to make them go?
