Storytime Programs - Spring 2016, Week Four

Welcome to the fourth week of spring storytime programs.  In addition to our weekly storytimes, there are numerous special events happening so be sure to check our Events Calendar http://gailbweb.gailborden.info/evanced/lib/eventcalendar.asp, give us a call, or stop by the desk in the Early Learning Center if you would like more information.  We hope that you'll be joining us.   Below you will find some of the books, rhymes, and fingerplays we are presenting this week.

Baby Rhyme Time (For babies 0-11 months and a caregiver)

Books
Baby Loves Spring by Katz
Raindrops - A Shower of Colors by Urban

Action Rhyme: Where's the Butterfly? (Tune: Where is Thumbkin?)
Where's the butterfly?
Where's the butterfly?
Here it is!  Here it is!
What a pretty butterfly.
What a pretty butterfly.
Happy spring!  Happy spring!

Sing this rhyme at home with your baby hiding a favorite toy or stuffed animal behind your back.  Then move it into baby's view.  Play a game of peekaboo together too.  Learning the concept of object permanence (the idea that the object is still there even when you can no longer see it) is an important developmental step.

Wonderful Ones (For babies 12-23 months and a caregiver)

Books
Time for a Hug by Gershator
Are You My Mommy? by Wan

Action Rhyme: The Hug Song (Tune: Row, Row, Row Your Boat)
Clap, clap, clap your hands,
Stomp, stomp, stomp your feet.
Give your mom a great big hug,
Because she is so neat.
Clap, clap, clap your hands,
Stomp, stomp, stomp your feet.
Give your mom a great big hug,
And then you take your seat.

There's always time for a hug, and if you can make a game out of it, well that's even better!  Sing this rhyme and hug mom, dad, grandma......

Terrific Twos (For toddlers 2-3 years and a caregiver)

Books
Fish Had a Wish by Garland
Little White Fish by Van Genechten

Action Rhyme: Did You Ever See a Fishy? (Tune: Did You Ever See a Lassie?)
Did you ever see a fishy, a fishy, a fishy?
Did you ever see a fishy swim this way and that?
Swim this way, and that way and this way and that way,
Did you ever see a fishy swim this way and that?

Make this week's storytime come alive by observing and talking about everything that you and your toddler can see in the library's large fish tank in KidSpace!  Count the fish together.  What do they look like?  Do they have legs and arms?

1, 2, Go!  (For children 1-3 years and a caregiver)

Instead of our storytime this week we enjoyed a live concert presented by Miss Carole and Clarence.  Customers sang and danced along to some of Carole Stephens' well-known songs.  Click on the link below to check our catalog for her CD's to enjoy at home!

Carole Stephens' CD's

StoryMix For 3 to 6 (For children 3-6 years without caregiver)

Books
This and That by Sykes
Farmyard Beat by Craig
Looking for Susie by Cook

Action Rhyme: I Know a Cat (Tune: BINGO)
I know a cat with perky ears,
And Kitty is her name-o.
K-I-T-T-Y, K-I-T-T-Y, K-I-T-T-Y
And Kitty is her name-o.

She makes a sound and it's "meow",
And Kitty is her name-o.
K-I-T-T-Y, K-I-T-T-Y, K-I-T-T-Y
And Kitty is her name-o.

What a great rhyme to teach spelling!  Repeat again and again until your preschooler can spell "Kitty" aloud.  Help your child write the word too.  Show him the connection between the spoken and written word - letters really do mean something!

Family Jam (For families with young children)

Books
Walking Through the Jungle by Lacome
Through the Heart of the Jungle by Emmett
The Snake Who Said Shhh by Parachini

Action Rhyme: I Went to the Jungle One Day (Tune: London Bridge)
I went to the jungle one day, jungle one day, jungle one day
I saw a monkey on the way and this is what he said, "oh-oh-oh-oh"
I went to the jungle one day, jungle one day, jungle one day
I saw a lion on the way and this is what he said, "roar"
I went to the jungle one day, jungle one day, jungle one day
I saw a snake on the way and this is what he said he said, "hiss"

Can your child think of other animals that live in the jungle?  What noises do they make?  Add them to the rhyme.
